A brief history of VHS.

Did you know VHS stands for "Video Home System" ? The VHS,recording and play back system was developed by the Victor Company of Japan, Limited (Better known by many of us as JVC) and hit the consumer market in the mid 1970's. VHS became the popular format for home recording and viewing, after a major format war with Sonys Betamax format.

VHS offered a longer playing time than the Betamax and a much simpler internal mechanics. Given the format war that went on it is surprising to learn that several of VHS's critical technologies are licensed from Sony.

By the middle of 2003 DVD had become the most poular format for buying pre recorded movies and now that technology enables us to transfer your home videos to DVD.
